Turtle Feeding and Watering Products

Before we get into the specifics about turtle feeding and watering products available today, let’s have a short zoology class and learn a little bit about the differences between turtles, tortoises and terrapins. Have you ever wondered what separates a tortoise from a turtle or terrapin? Is one a land dweller and the other a water-dwelling creature? Do they eat different things and live in different environments? These are all valid questions, so let’s clear up the mystery of tortoise vs. turtle vs. terrapin right now in a quick, easy way. All turtles, tortoises, and terrapins are reptiles; scientists often refer to them as chelonians because they are in the taxonomic order called “Chelonia” (from the Greek word for tortoise). Chelonians (a word you will often see on websites about how to care for turtles) live everywhere including deserts, oceans and creeks. They are named differently because their names refer to the differences in where their particular species lives. Regardless of whether you have a turtle, tortoise or terrapin as a pet, you’ll need feeding and watering products from Zen Pet Supplies—your one-stop online store for all your reptile’s needs.

Now, let’s get into the specific differences between these three fascinating creatures courtesy of the San Diego Zoo’s very informative website. Turtles spend most of their lives in the water, so you will see that they have webbed feet for swimming. Sea turtles have long feet that form flippers making them especially good swimmers, and they have a streamlined body shape that allows them to quickly glide through water with ease. Sea turtles rarely leave the ocean, except when the females come ashore to lay eggs, although some species, such as the green sea turtle, come out on reefs and beaches to bask in the warm rays of the sun. Other turtles live in fresh water, like ponds and lakes. They swim, but they also climb out onto banks, logs, or rocks to bask in the sun. In cold weather, they may burrow into the mud, and go into a state of “torpor” (a state of inactivity) until spring arrives with its warm weather. Tortoises are a land-dwelling animal that eat low-growing shrubs, grasses, and cacti, and because they are not in water much, they do not have webbed feet. Instead, their feet are round and stumpy and designed for walking on rough terrain. Tortoises that live in hot, dry habitats use their strong forelimbs to dig burrows, and when it’s too hot in the sun, they head underground to cool off. Terrapins spend their time both on land and in water, but they always live near water, along rivers, ponds, and lakes. Terrapins are often found in murky, thick, swampy areas, and the word “terrapin” comes from an Algonquian word for turtle. The University of Maryland’s sports teams’ mascot is the Terrapin, so if you ever run into an alum of the University of Maryland, you’ll know exactly what a terrapin is. Now, let’s talk about turtle feeding and watering products.

We have an extensive selection of watering and feeding products for turtles including water and food dishes and bowls, feeding tongs, syringe feeders, hanging feeders, water conditioners, and automatic watering supplies designed to ensure your pet turtles get the water they need when you’re away from the home for extended periods of time. All of the products for feeding and watering your pet turtles are designed to make life easier for you and to provide your turtle what he needs. Our shallow-rim dishes allow easy access for smaller turtles, and they’re easy to clean. The sizes and shades we carry will fit any size terrarium. Our automatic watering devices deliver an endless supply of clean, fresh water, while the small basin discourages reptiles from spoiling their water with waste. We carry feeding tongs that allow you to safely feed all types of animals, and feeding tongs are actually more hygienic than using your fingers. We even carry a fish-shaped floating turtle feeder that releases turtle food pellets when your turtle bumps it. Instead of just dumping their food into their habitat, turtles get to forage for their food, which is their natural instinct. The food’s a bright orange color allows the turtle to see the food inside the feeder. We also have syringe feeders that are safe and non-toxic, and they’re designed to administer liquid food and medications to reptiles, small animals and even birds.
