Sand is definitely one of the most popular choices for hermit crab bedding because it’s super inexpensive and it’s re-usable. Cleaning and drying sand can be messy, though, so your children may need some adult supervision and guidance as they learn the in’s and out’s of setting up and maintaining their crab’s bedding and substrate. Substrate refers to the materials and substances that line the bottom of any reptile’s habitat, and the words “substrate” and “bedding” may be used interchangeably. Bedding is not just for sleeping when it comes to reptiles, as they will burrow and “hang out” in their bedding, also. Sand is a super cool addition to your crab’s habitat because it’s lovely to look at, and you can see your hermit crab’s travels imprinted in the sand. They love tunneling into sand and will stay there for hours just languishing in the comfort and coolness of this substrate. Be sure not to mist your crabs while they’re inside the tank because the sand will become damp, which will lead to the growth of bacteria.

Sphagnum moss is another top choice for hermit crab bedding, and it’s actually the number one preferred moss for all vivariums. This type of moss helps to hold water and stays moist longer than any other type of moss on the market today. Sphagnum moss is also durable and is made of natural compounds to help prevent it from decomposing in humid environments—like the ones created in terrariums in your home. Coconut fiber is another eco-friendly choice for your crab’s substrate. This product naturally absorbs and breaks down odor and waste products, which makes for a much more pleasant living experience for your pets and for you!
