Let’s take a crash course in Hedgehog 101 for a moment thanks to Wikipedia: A hedgehog is any of the spiny mammals of the subfamily, Erinaceinae, and there are seventeen species of hedgehog found throughout certain parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand. The name hedgehog indicates the pig-like snout this animal has, and he really is rather adorable. Now, let’s talk about hedgehogs as pets and what you can expect as far as personality, environment and behavior are concerned. Remember, you always want to set up a new pet’s environment at your home before his arrival because it can be overwhelming to bring home a new pet and then have to rush out and get his supplies.

A hedgehog’s intelligence is comparable to that of a hamster; they do not come when they’re called or seek out human contact. They can learn certain behaviors, however, through positive reinforcement and/or conditioning but only at a very basic level. In other words, your hedgehog will likely not learn how to jump through hoops, catch a Frisbee or dance like your pooch will. If hedgehogs are treated gently and shown human affection, they will socialize and bond with you. When you first bring your hedgehog home, he will need time to transition to his new environment. He’ll be a bit alarmed by the new sights, sounds and smells around him; in time, he will relax and settle in to his new home. A typical pet hedgehog weighs between 6 ounces and 2 pounds and need about the same amount of space as a guinea pig. Hedgehogs don’t bark or make much noise; they are very quiet pets. Hedgehogs do not have dander like cats, dogs, and other animals, so they are great pets for people who have allergies. Because they are not rodents, they are not prone to chew or destroy their surroundings, and they don’t require shots or vaccinations but occasional veterinary checkups are recommended. Though not aggressive by nature, their spines are used as defense only when they are scared, nervous, or feel the need to protect themselves. Zen Pet Supplies has a number of hedgehog products including cages, exercise wheels & balls, food and watering products available today.
