You may be wondering what, exactly, canister filters do if you’re not familiar with these amazing devices. Here’s what they do: Canister filters remove the water from the fish tank through an intake tube, sieve, or valve, then run it through filter media in a pressurized canister, and pump the filtered aquarium water back into the fish tank by spill way or spray bar. Fish aquarium canister filters offer the highest quality filtration by providing mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration for your high-quality and high-capacity aquarium. Canister filters always use water pumps to move water, since their system is sealed, and those water pumps can be found right here in our online store. Most models of canister filter have necessary water pumps, usually either built into the cover or built into the base, but some models of canister filter require a separate external water pump. All of these pieces of equipment, and more, can be found here.

Canister filters are extremely efficient when properly used and maintained. A good quality canister filter gives you the advantage of selecting the type of filtration appropriate for your tank by customizing the filter media, rather than being bound to use manufacturer’s pre-made cartridges. A canister filter usually requires less maintenance than a power filter because the water is forced through the filter media, rather than being allowed to flow over or around the media. Also, most canister filters return water to the tank through a spray bar, reducing evaporation and current. As with any other type of filter, you need to replace any carbon in the filter on a regular basis as carbon that’s become inundated with waste will begin to release toxins into the water, harming and even killing your fish. Canister filters are will work especially well in medium to large tanks, as they can filter a large volume of water efficiently. If you have invested hundreds or thousands of dollars in gorgeous fish, you want to keep them alive and well for as long as possible. The best way to do that is to love them and invest in the necessary equipment to help them thrive.
