Air Pumps for Aquariums

Just like any other living thing, fish need air to live, and while you don’t need an air pump for a small fish bowl, you do need an air pump for certain tanks and situations. Air pumps and their accessories serve many different purposes, and they’re fairly inexpensive considering how many benefits they provide. They increase the oxygen level in the aquarium and improve water quality. If you’re an experienced aquarist, you will know what type of air pump you need for the size of your tank and the type of fish you house there. If you’re fairly inexperienced when it comes to taking care of fish, all you have to do is get some guidance from a veteran fish owner or do a bit of research online. There are a number of different types of fish tank air pumps available now at Zen Pet Supplies, and we encourage you to browse our selection and see which one(s) would work best for your aquarium.

Let’s first make sure we know what an air pump does and how it works. It’s pretty simple, really. An air pump is just a piece of equipment that moves air, and most air pumps for fish tanks move the air by using an electromagnet to rapidly vibrate a rubber diaphragm. While the air is moved, some noise will be made, but it’s nothing that would disrupt you or create a nuisance. You may actually find the sound created by an air pump quite relaxing. Consider it white noise that may even lull you to sleep if it’s in your bedroom. Many novice aquarists wonder if an air pump is even necessary, so let’s “tackle” that question here. Another bad fish pun? There are some instances in which an air pump is absolutely necessary. If you have a filter that’s run by an air pump, then, of course, the air pump is necessary because without the air pump, the filter wouldn’t work. Also, if you have an active ornament that’s run by an air pump, then you have to add an air pump to make the ornament work. Another instance in which an air pump is necessary is if you If you want to put an air stone in your aquarium to create a cascade of bubbles; an air pump is necessary to create the bubbles.

One misconception is an air pump puts oxygen directly into the water; that’s just not the case. Air pumps, do, however, increase the surface area of the water and improve the circulation of the water—both of which make for a more hospitable habitat for your fish. Another major issue regarding air pumps is what type of air pump you need for your tank. When choosing an air pump from Zen Pet Supplies, here are some factors to consider: 1) The more things that run from your air pump, the larger the pump you’ll need, so the fewer things you are running from your air pump, the smaller the air pump you’ll need. 2) If your tank is more than 18-20” tall, you will need a deep-water air pump that’s built to push air that is that far below the surface of the water. Our best advice is to read about which type of air pump would work best for your aquarium or ask someone who has experience with aquarium air pumps. One last piece of advice: When choosing an air pump, buy one that’s a bit bigger than you think you’ll need because the larger pump will give you some leeway if you underestimate what you need, and a larger pump allows for expansion of your habitat at a later date without having to buy a larger pump every time you grow your aquarium.
