Chinchilla Dust Baths

Chinchillas are super adorable animals that are making many families happy because they’re such remarkable pets. These furry buddies are small rodents that can usually fit in the palm of your hand, and they usually only weigh about 1-2 pounds. Chinchilla fur is incredibly soft because of a cool trait they have—chinchilla’s can grow about 60 hairs from one single follicle. Native to the Andes Mountains in South America, chinchillas kind of look like a cross between a super adorable rat and a super cute squirrel. Chinchillas are rodents, and many people erroneously think rodents are dirty vermin that feed on trash and scraps of food. Quite the contrary is true because these fascinating creatures are odorless, and gentle animals. Chinchillas would not really make a great pet for a small child, however, mainly due to maintenance/care issues. It’s better if adults watch over these little guys. One thing you’ll need if you own a chinchilla is a dust bath; Zen Pet Supplies has a number of chinchilla dust baths in our current inventory.
Chinchillas have a lifespan of 10-20 years, so be sure you’re in for a long commitment to your fur ball. If you’re considering adding a Chinchilla to your family, or if you are already a Chinchilla owner, be sure to do your research about dust baths before buying one. If you know someone who owns a chinchilla, you may want to ask for some advice on their care, especially if you’re still on the fence about getting one as a pet. Chinchillas in the wild in South America will roll around in volcanic ash in order to clean themselves. The ash will soak up any oil or grime in the Chinchilla’s fur. Not much volcanic ash lying around the house and the local grocery or home goods store, and that’s where we come in.

When your Chinchilla rolls around in a dust bath, a pretty big mess will be created, but we have that problem solved. We carry a special dust bath that is dust free to minimize the mess that your furry buddy needs to make to get clean and shiny and soft. When you combine this special dust bath with a dust bathtub from Zen Pet Supplies, your Chinchilla is able to clean himself without spraying dust all over your home. It is believed that Chinchillas take these dust baths not just to keep themselves clean, but for fun, too. How cool is that? Imagine owning a furry friend who will run into a pile dust, roll around and get clean! Your chinchilla will need a dust bath about twice a week to stay clean and joyful. If your Chinchilla ever gets wet, you need to dry him off immediately and as thoroughly as possible. If a Chinchilla’s coat gets wet, the water can drip down into his thick, lustrous fur and cause bacteria to grow, which can result in a very uncomfortable skin infection.
