Aquatic Turtle and Tortoise Food

Turtles may not be as cuddly as cats and dogs, but they make fantastic pets for other reasons: They’re fun to care for, fascinating to watch, and they’ve been around since prehistoric times, so they deserve some respect! One appealing thing about turtles (and some tortoises) is that they are fairly easy to care for, which makes them great pets for people who don’t have the time to care for pets that require much more care and attention. If you keep your pet turtle’s habitat clean, feed him the right foods and provide plenty of water, your turtle will be happy and live a nice healthy life. What a turtle is able to depends on its species, and knowing what to feed your turtle to give it a proper nutritional diet is important and requires some homework or discussion with an experienced turtle owner. Zen Pet Supplies carries a large selection of turtle/tortoise food and supplements to provide these amazing creatures the nutrients they need to thrive.
Do you know the differences between turtles and tortoises? If not, you will after you read this! Turtles spend most of their life in the water, so they have webbed feed for swimming. Sea turtles are especially adapted for aquatic life because they have long feet that form flippers and a streamlined body shape allowing them to swim quite fast. They rarely leave the ocean, except when the females come ashore to lay their eggs, although some species, such as the green sea turtle, do come out on reefs and beaches to bask. Other turtles live in fresh water, like ponds and lakes. They swim, but they also climb out onto banks, logs, or rocks to bask in the sun. In cold weather, they may burrow into the mud, where they go into torpor (a long period of rest or inactivity) until spring brings warm weather again.

Tortoises, on the hand, are land animals without webbed feet that eat low-growing shrubs, grasses and cacti. Instead of webbed feet, their feet are round and stumpy for walking on land. Tortoises that live in hot, dry habitats use their strong forelimbs to dig burrows, and when it’s too hot in the sun, they slip underground. Zen Pet Supplies carries both turtle and tortoise food and they’re quite similar. We carry food that is specially formulated for aquatic turtles, and we also carry food that is made land-based tortoises. Our cans of fruit can be fed to both, but before feeding any turtle food to your pet, please do research and understand what nutrients your pets need to life a long, healthy life.
